A seamless blend of old and new, Heidelberg is one of the most picturesque cities in Germany. Situated on the banks of the River Neckar, the city has an air of historic charm about it, while its status as a major university town ensures it is always lively. In fact, Heidelberg University is the oldest educational institution of its type in Germany, having been founded in 1386. It is this richness of historic legacy that continues to draw tourists on flights to Heidelberg area year upon year.
The city’s Old Town is a maze of narrow cobbled streets and alleyways, a place where it is quite easy to lose track of time as you take in the history around you. Many of the old buildings which line the streets now house delightful gift shops and quaint cafes, where it is possible to enjoy locally made pastries and other traditional German dishes. Perched high above the Old Town, keeping an ever-watchful eye over the city, is Heidelberg Castle. Although many parts of this magnificent Gothic fortress are now simply ruins, the castle remains an incredible sight, the backdrop of lush green forest adding to the scenic splendour. Adding an extra dimension to the city’s appeal, Heidelberg is famed for its vibrant nightlife, with countless traditional taverns selling a wide selection of German ales and many also offering live music and entertainment.
The city itself is relatively compact and has a large pedestrian zone, making it straightforward to get around on foot. The efficient public transport system includes regular bus and tram services, while a scenic mountain railway links the oldest areas of the city with the castle. Travel passes which cover all forms of public transport are available from tourist centres and a number of hotels.
The airports at Stuttgart and Frankfurt are both within easy reach of the city but most international travellers on flights to Heidelberg tend to come through Frankfurt. There are a number of onward transportation options from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) to Heidelberg, with one of the quickest being by the trains which leave directly from the airport. There is also a regular shuttle bus service to the city, in addition to a plentiful selection of taxis. All of the taxis are fitted with meters but this still tends to be the most expensive option.
